The Yellow - Billed Babbler is usually seen in groups calling and foraging for food. It has a weak flight and like other babblers is not migratory. It is endemic to south India. The babbler has short and rounded wings. It usually occupies cultivation fields, gardens and scrubs. It is part of the genus Arya. These birds have a pale buff belly, grey colour throat, greyish - brown on top and breast with some mottling. Their eyes are whitish - blue. Their rump is pale and the tail has a broad dark tip. It has a whitish crown and nape. They wake up before dawn and are relatively inactive during the hot hours of the afternoon. They preen themselves before roosting at around 7 - 7:30 PM.

They have yellow beaks and hence the name yellow-billed.
